  • a country on the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and Russia; population 5,250,300 (est. 2009); official languages, Finnish and Swedish; capital, Helsinki. Finnish name Suomi.

The northern third of the country lies within the Arctic Circle. Long an area of Swedish-Russian rivalry, Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809, becoming an independent republic after the Russian Revolution. Wars with the Soviet Union were fought in 1939–40. Finland joined the European Union in 1995
