  • (1798–1863), French painter, the chief painter of the French romantic school; full name Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix. He is known for his use of vivid colour, free drawing, and exotic, violent, or macabre subject matter. Notable works: The Massacre at Chios (1824).
