  • (1884–1966), Dutch-born American chemical physicist; full name Peter Joseph William Debye. Debye is best known for establishing the existence of permanent electric dipole moments in many molecules, demonstrating the use of these to determine molecular size and shape, and modifying Einstein’s theory of specific heats as applied to solids. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1936).
