Definition of Crane, Stephen
  • (1871–1900), American writer. His reputation rests on his novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895), a study of an inexperienced soldier in the American Civil War. It was hailed as a masterpiece of psychological realism, even though Crane himself had no personal experience of war.
