Definition of Bergson, Henri
  • (1859–1941), French philosopher; full name Henri Louis Bergson. Dividing the world into life (or consciousness) and matter, he rejected Darwinian evolution and argued that life possesses an inherent creative impulse (élan vital) which creates new forms as life seeks to impose itself on matter. Nobel Prize for Literature (1927).
