Definition of Banda, Hastings Kamuzu
(1906–97), Malawian statesman, Prime Minister 1964–94 and the first President of the Republic of Malawi 1966–94. Banda was defeated in Malawi’s first multiparty elections in 1994; the following year he was acquitted on charges of murdering four political opponents.
