Definition of Alvarez, Luis Walter
(1911–88), American physicist. In 1980 Alvarez and his son identified iridium in sediment from the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary and proposed that this resulted from a catastrophic meteorite impact that may have resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.
