Derivatives

viselike

adjective

Origin:

Middle English (denoting a screw or winch): from Old French vis, from Latin vitis 'vine'

Do not confuse vise with vice. The 'tool used to hold something in place' is spelled vise, but it is pronounced the same as vice, which has several meanings, including 'a bad habit' (impulse buying is my vice) and 'next in rank' (the vice president). In British English, however, even the tool is spelled vice.
