late Middle English (in the sense 'debt'): from French débit, from Latin debitum 'something owed' (see debt). The verb sense dates from the 17th century; the current noun sense from the late 18th century

Spelling rule

Do not double the final consonant when adding endings that begin with a vowel to a word that ends in a vowel plus a consonant, if the stress is not at the end of the word (as in target): (debits, debiting, debited).
