noun (plural blennies)

  • a small, spiny-finned marine fish with scaleless skin and a blunt head, typically living in shallow inshore or intertidal waters.
    • Family Blennidae: several genera, in particular Blennius
  • any of a number of other small fishes that resemble or are related to the true blennies, including the hairy blenny (Labrisomus nuchipinnis, family Clinidae), found especially along the Atlantic coast from the Bahamas to Brazil.

mid 18th century: from Latin blennius, from Greek blennos 'mucus' (because of its mucous coating)
