Definition of Tchaikovsky, Pyotr
(1840–93), Russian composer; full name Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky. His music is characterized by melodiousness and depth of expression and is often melancholy. Notable works include the ballets Swan Lake (1877) and The Nutcracker (1892) and the overture 1812 (1880).
