  • the name of two semilegendary Etruscan kings of ancient Rome; anglicized name Tarquin.
  • Tarquinius Priscus, reigned circa 616-circa 578 bc; full name Lucius Tarquinius Priscus. According to tradition he was murdered by the sons of the previous king.
  • Tarquinius Superbus, reigned circa 534-circa 510 bc; full name Lucius Tarquinius Superbus; known as Tarquin the Proud. According to tradition he was the son or grandson of Tarquinius Priscus. Noted for his cruelty, he was expelled from the city, and the republic was founded.
