Definition of Sholom Aleichem
  • (1859–1916), US Yiddish writer; born in Ukraine; born Solomon J. Rabinowitz. He wrote about common Russian Jews who lived in small towns. His stories, especially Tevye’s Daughters (1894) formed the basis for the musical Fiddler on the Roof (1964).
