Definition of Scott, Sir Walter
(1771–1832), Scottish novelist and poet. He established the form of the historical novel in Britain and was influential in his treatment of rural themes and his use of regional speech. Notable novels: Waverley (1814), Ivanhoe (1819), and Kenilworth (1821).
