Definition of Saladin
  • (1137–93), sultan of Egypt and Syria 1174–93; Arabic name Salah-ad-Din Yusuf ibn-Ayyub. He reconquered Jerusalem from the Christians in 1187, but he was defeated by Richard the Lionheart at Arsuf in 1191.
