Definition of Ross, Sir James Clark
  • (1800–62), British explorer. He discovered the north magnetic pole in 1831 and, while heading an expedition to the Antarctic from 1839 to 1843, also discovered Ross Island, Ross Dependency, and the Ross Sea.
