  • (1689–1761), English novelist. His first novel Pamela (1740–41), entirely in the form of letters and journals, popularized the epistolary novel. He experimented further with the genre in Clarissa Harlowe (1747–48), in which he explored moral issues in a detailed social context with psychological intensity.
