Definition of Pontine Marshes
  • an area of marshland in western Italy, on the Tyrrhenian coast south of Rome. It was infested with malaria in ancient Roman times, but not until 1928 was an extensive program to drain the marshes begun. Several new towns have since been built in the region, which is now a productive agricultural area. Italian name Agro Pontino.
