Definition of Nansen, Fridtjof
  • (1861–1930), Norwegian Arctic explorer. In 1888, he led the first expedition to cross the Greenland ice fields, and, five years later, on board the Fram, he sailed from Siberia for the North Pole, which he failed to reach. He later organized relief work among the victims of famine in Russia. Nobel Peace Prize (1922).
