- (1901–78), US anthropologist and social psychologist. She worked in Samoa and the New Guinea area and wrote a number of studies of primitive cultures, including Coming of Age in Samoa (1928). Her writings made anthropology accessible to a wide readership and demonstrated its relevance to Western society.
