Definition of Lhasa
- the capital of Tibet; population 140,000. It is situated in the northern Himalayas at an altitude of circa 11,800 feet (3,600 m) on a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. Known as the Forbidden City until the 20th century because it was closed to foreign visitors, it was the seat of the Dalai Lama until 1959.
