Definition of Kelvin, 1st Baron
  • (1824–1907), British physicist and natural philosopher; born William Thomson. He introduced the absolute scale of temperature and restated the second law of thermodynamics. He was involved in the laying of the first Atlantic cable, for which he invented several instruments.
