  • (1910–86), French novelist, poet, and playwright. Much of his work portrayed life in the criminal and homosexual underworlds, of which he was a part. Notable works: Our Lady of the Flowers (novel, 1944), The Maids (play, 1947), and The Thief’s Journal (autobiography, 1949).
