  • (1871–1945), US novelist; full name Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), caused controversy for its frank treatment of the heroine’s sexuality and ambition. Other notable works: An American Tragedy (1925) and America Is Worth Saving (1941).
