  • a country in the western West Indies, a mountainous island, the most northern of the Windward Islands, in the Caribbean Sea; population 72,700 (est. 2009); capital, Roseau; languages, English (official) and Creole.

The island came into British possession at the end of the 18th century and became an independent republic within the Commonwealth of Nations in 1978
