Definition of Debye, Peter
  • (1884–1966), US chemical physicist; born in the Netherlands; full name Peter Joseph William Debye. He is noted for establishing the existence of permanent electric dipole moments in many molecules, for demonstrating the use of these to determine molecular size and shape, and for modifying Einstein’s theory of specific heats as applied to solids. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1936).
