Definition of Cid, El
  • Count of Bivar (circa 1043–99), Spanish soldier; born Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. He captured Valencia from the Moors in 1094 and went on to rule it. He is immortalized in Poema del Cid (12th century) and in Pierre Corneille’s play Le Cid (1637).
