Definition of Chandler, Raymond
(1888–1959), US novelist; full name Raymond Thornton Chandler. Much of his work, written in a tough and realistic style, features the private detective Philip Marlowe. Notable novels: The Big Sleep (1939), Farewell, My Lovely (1940), and The Long Goodbye (1953).
