Definition of Byrd, Richard
- (1888–1957), US explorer, naval officer, and aviator; full name Richard Evelyn Byrd. He claimed to have made the first aircraft flight over the North Pole 1926, although his actual course has been disputed. He was the first to fly over the South Pole 1929 and led further scientific expeditions to the Antarctic in 1933–34 and 1939–41.
