- (1918-), US journalist; born Pauline Esther Friedman. Author of the syndicated “Dear Abby” advice column from 1956, she competed with her twin sister, advice columnist Ann Landers. In 1987, Van Buren’s column became coauthored with her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, who, by 2000, had assumed sole authorship.
