Stanley, Sir Henry Morton

- (1841–1904), Welsh explorer; born John Rowlands. As a newspaper correspondent he was sent in 1869 to central Africa to find David Livingstone; two years later he found him at Lake Tanganyika. After Livingstone’s death in 1873 Stanley continued his explorations in Africa, charting Lake Victoria, tracing the course of the Congo, and mapping Lake Albert.
