(1824–84), Czech composer. Regarded as the founder of Czech music, he was dedicated to the cause of Czech nationalism, as is apparent in his operas, such as The Bartered Bride (1866) and in the cycle of tone poems Ma Vlast (‘My Country’, 1874-9).
