  • (b.1924), Zimbabwean statesman, Prime Minister 1980-7 and President since 1987; full name Robert Gabriel Mugabe. He became Prime Minister in Zimbabwe’s first post-independence elections. In 1987 his party ZANU merged with ZAPU and Mugabe became executive President of a one-party state.
