  • (1933-), US civil rights activist; full name James Howard Meredith. In 1962, he became the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi after 3,000 troops quelled riots. He wrote Three Years in Mississippi (1966) and Mississippi: A Volume of Eleven Books (1995).
