  • (1832–83), French painter. He adopted a realist approach which greatly influenced the Impressionists, using pure colour to give a direct unsentimental effect. Notable works: Déjeuner sur l’herbe (1863), Olympia (1865), and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882).
