  • (1941-), US vice president 2001–09; full name Richard Bruce Cheney. A conservative Republican from Wyoming, he served as secretary of defense under President George H. W. Bush 1989–93 before becoming vice president under President George W. Bush. He was a major proponent of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
