  • an autonomous territory in NW Georgia, west of the Caucasus mountains on the Black Sea; population 215,972 (2003); capital, Sokhumi. In 1992 Abkhazia unilaterally declared itself independent, sparking armed conflict with Georgia, and the following year drove Georgian forces from its territory.
